Overview

What Is Design Mix Testing?

A concrete mix design — also called a concrete mixture design or cement mix design — determines the correct proportions of cement, aggregates, water, and admixtures needed to achieve the required strength and performance for a specific project. Engineers and contractors use these tests to produce an approved mix design report before construction begins.

Skipping this process puts your project at risk of rejection during quality audits by departments like NHAI, PWD, Railways, and PMGSY. A failed pavement or structural element because of an untested mix can cost several times more to rectify than the test itself.

Our Services

Design Mix Testing Services

We conduct three design mix tests at our Madurai lab — each structured against the applicable IS standard or MoRT&H specification, not a generic template:

Concrete Design Mix (M10–M60)

Our concrete mix design service determines the optimum water-cement ratio, aggregate gradation, and admixture dosage to achieve the target mean strength for grades M10 through M60. The concrete mixture design report follows IS 10262:2019 and includes trial mix data, strength calculations, and w/c ratio determination — accepted by NHAI, PWD, Railways, CPWD, and PMGSY project offices.

GSB Mix Design

Granular Sub Base (GSB) mix design is prepared as per MoRT&H Specifications (Table 400-1), with full gradation analysis and compaction data. GSB is the structural foundation layer beneath road pavements — a correct mix design ensures adequate load distribution and long-term drainage performance.

MoRT&H Table 400-1

WMM Mix Design

Wet Mix Macadam (WMM) mix design is prepared per MoRT&H Specifications (Table 400-8) and defines the aggregate blend and moisture content for the base course used in highways and rural roads. Correct WMM mix design is essential for achieving the required CBR and bearing capacity beneath bituminous surfacing layers.

Why It Matters

The Cost of Skipping a Proper Mix Design

Submitting a mix design report without proper testing support is a common reason for quality audit failures on government projects. Departments increasingly require test reports that reference the applicable IS standard or MoRT&H table — and verify that the laboratory follows documented procedures.

A failed audit means delays, additional testing, and potential rejection of work already completed. An independent, NABL-aligned concrete mix design report from Jancy Labs eliminates that risk — giving your project team, client, and the approving authority confidence in the mix from day one.

How It Works

How to Get Your Design Mix Report

Getting your concrete mix design or road mix design report from Jancy Labs is straightforward:

01

Contact Us First

Call or WhatsApp us with your project specification — concrete grade required, aggregate source, and department submitting to. We will confirm the sample quantity, packaging, and transport requirements.

02

Send Your Materials

Courier or deliver your material samples — cement, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, and admixtures (for concrete mix design) or aggregate samples (for GSB/WMM). We confirm receipt and start testing within the agreed schedule.

03

Testing & Trial Mixes

Our engineers prepare the concrete mixture design or road mix design following IS 10262:2019 or MoRT&H specifications. Trial mixes are cast and tested for workability, unit weight, and compressive strength.

04

Certified Report Issued

You receive a complete, engineer-signed mix design report — structured for your department's submission requirements, with all data tables, graphs, and IS/MoRT&H references. Ready to submit.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Jancy Labs equipped to conduct design mix testing?
Yes. Jancy Labs conducts concrete design mix, GSB mix design, and WMM mix design testing at its Madurai facility. All tests follow IS 10262:2019 or the relevant MoRT&H specification, and reports include all data required for project submission. Our lab maintains calibrated equipment and traceable measurement practices aligned with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 principles.
What is a concrete mix design and why is it needed?
A concrete mix design — also called a concrete mixture design or cement mix design — is a systematic procedure to determine the optimum proportions of cement, water, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, and admixtures to produce concrete of a specified grade (e.g. M25, M30, M40) with the required workability and durability. It is needed because field-mixed or nominal mixes often fail to consistently achieve the specified compressive strength, especially for government-audited projects. IS 10262:2019 is the governing standard for concrete mix design in India.
Which design mix tests does Jancy Labs conduct?
Jancy Labs currently conducts three design mix tests: Concrete Design Mix (IS 10262:2019) for grades M10–M60, GSB Mix Design (MoRT&H Table 400-1) for Granular Sub Base layers, and WMM Mix Design (MoRT&H Table 400-8) for Wet Mix Macadam base courses. We can advise on which test your project requires based on your specification — call or WhatsApp us with your project details.
Do NHAI and PWD accept Jancy Labs mix design reports?
Contractors working on NHAI, PWD, and PMGSY projects have successfully used Jancy Labs' reports for quality submissions. We recommend you confirm the specific approval requirements with your project's quality assurance team before proceeding, as acceptance criteria can vary by project and circle.
What is the difference between a concrete mix design and a nominal mix?
A nominal mix (e.g. 1:2:4 or 1:1.5:3) uses fixed volume ratios without testing the actual materials. A concrete mix design tests the specific cement, aggregates, and water available on site, then calculates proportions to reliably achieve the target strength grade. IS 456:2000 restricts nominal mixes to grades up to M20 for ordinary reinforced concrete — all higher grades and all government-audited projects require a designed mix per IS 10262:2019.
Can I send samples by courier?
Yes. You can send materials to our Madurai address. Please call us at +91-8680049004 before dispatch so we can confirm sample quantity, packaging, labelling requirements, and transport contact. For concrete mix design we typically need cement, coarse aggregate (10 mm and 20 mm), fine aggregate (Zone II), and admixture samples.
What is GSB and WMM mix design?
GSB (Granular Sub Base) mix design determines the correct blend of crushed stone and natural gravel to meet MoRT&H Table 400-1 grading requirements for the structural sub-base layer under road pavements. WMM (Wet Mix Macadam) mix design determines aggregate proportions and optimum moisture content for the base course layer per MoRT&H Table 400-8. Both are required before highway and rural road contractors can commence pavement layer construction on government projects.
