The four main types of bitumen are: 1. Penetration Grade Bitumen — the most common type, classified by its hardness (e.g. 60/70, 80/100) and used extensively in road construction and pavement work. 2. Oxidised (Blown) Bitumen — produced by blowing air through hot bitumen to increase its viscosity and softening point; widely used in waterproofing, roofing, and industrial applications. 3. Cutback Bitumen — bitumen dissolved in a petroleum solvent to reduce viscosity for cold-weather application; classified as rapid-curing (RC), medium-curing (MC), or slow-curing (SC). 4. Bitumen Emulsion — bitumen dispersed in water with an emulsifier, used for tack coats, prime coats, and surface dressings where cold application is needed. Each type has specific grade requirements that must be verified by a bitumen testing lab before use.

The penetration test of bitumen measures the hardness and consistency of bitumen by determining how deep (in tenths of a millimetre) a standard 100g needle penetrates the sample in 5 seconds at 25°C. A higher penetration value indicates softer bitumen. This test, carried out to IS 1203, is the primary basis for classifying bitumen grades such as 60/70 and 80/100 — the numbers directly refer to the penetration range.

The softening point test of bitumen — known as the Ring-and-Ball test (IS 1205) — determines the temperature at which bitumen softens enough to allow a steel ball to fall through a bitumen-filled ring. It indicates the heat susceptibility of bitumen and is critical for selecting grades suitable for high-temperature climates like Tamil Nadu. A higher softening point means greater resistance to rutting and deformation under summer heat.

The bitumen ductility test (IS 1208) measures the distance in centimetres to which a standard briquette of bitumen can be stretched at 27°C before breaking. High ductility indicates the bitumen can accommodate pavement deformation without cracking. A minimum ductility of 75 cm is typically required for road-grade bitumen. Low ductility values warn of brittle behaviour that leads to fatigue cracking in flexible pavements.

The flash and fire point test for bitumen (IS 1209) is a critical safety test. The flash point is the lowest temperature at which bitumen vapour momentarily ignites when exposed to a flame — typically above 220°C for road-grade bitumen. The fire point is slightly higher and indicates sustained combustion. These values are essential for safe heating, transport, and mixing operations at hot-mix asphalt plants, helping prevent fire hazards on site.

The viscosity test of bitumen evaluates the flow resistance of bitumen at a specified temperature. Absolute viscosity (IS 1206 Part 2) is measured at 60°C — the temperature at which a road pavement surface is most susceptible to rutting under traffic loads. Kinematic viscosity is measured at 135°C to assess pumpability and workability during mixing and laying. Viscosity grade (VG) bitumen, such as VG-30 and VG-40, is now the preferred classification for Indian roads over the older penetration grades.
