Pile Integrity Test (PIT) โ€” Low Strain Integrity Testing of Piles

Tested as per IS 14893:2021 ยท NABL Accredited Laboratory (Certificate No. TC-12176)

Find necking, voids, cracks and soil inclusions in your piles before the pile caps go on, and confirm each pile's length at the same time. Jancy Labs carries out the pile integrity test on site across Tamil Nadu with the low strain pulse echo method. Then we issue a signed report for every pile.

Overview

What Is a Pile Integrity Test?

A pile integrity test (PIT), also called the low strain integrity test, sonic integrity test or pulse echo test, checks whether a concrete pile is one continuous, sound column of the right length. Because it is a non destructive test, we do not core, drill or break the pile, so it stays in service.

In fact, pile construction is a "blind" process, because once the concrete goes into the bore, nobody can see what happens below ground. For example, collapsed bore walls, soil falling into the concrete, poor tremie practice or segregation can leave a pile with a narrowed section, a void or a break. PIT therefore finds these problems while they are still cheap to fix, before anyone builds the pile cap, grade beams and superstructure on top.

Because each pile takes only a few minutes to test, PIT is the practical way to check every pile on a project rather than a small sample.

Test Principle

How the Pile Integrity Test Works

The test relies on how a stress wave travels through a pile. First, a light tap at the top sends a wave down the concrete. Then anything that changes the pile's cross-section or concrete quality reflects part of that wave back up, so a sensor at the top can record it.

01

Prepare the Pile Head

First, the site team cuts the pile head down to sound concrete, then cleans and levels it so the sensor and hammer make clean contact.

02

Fix the Accelerometer

Next, our engineer fixes a sensitive accelerometer to the pile top and then connects it to the PIT data logger.

03

Tap with the Hammer

After that, a hand-held hammer gives the pile head a light impact. As a result, a low strain stress wave travels down the pile and reflects from the toe and from any change in section.

04

Read the Reflectogram

Finally, the data logger plots the recorded velocity signal against depth. Our engineer then reads the toe reflection and any earlier reflections to judge integrity and length.

L = c ร— t รท 2

In short, we calculate pile length (L) from the wave speed in concrete (c) and the time (t) the wave takes to reach the toe and return. Similarly, the same calculation gives the approximate depth of any anomaly that shows up before the toe.

What It Detects

What a Pile Integrity Test Can Find

In other words, a pile integrity test flags changes in the pile's impedance, such as its cross-section, density or stiffness. On site, that usually means one of these:

Pile Length

Estimates the actual pile length from the toe reflection, which helps especially when piling records are missing or doubtful.

Necking

Picks up a reduced cross-section, for example where the bore wall collapses or soil squeezes in during concreting.

Bulging

Shows an increased cross-section when concrete spreads into soft soil or into overbreak in the bore.

Voids & Soil Inclusions

Indicates pockets inside the pile shaft where soil, slurry or water took the place of concrete during casting.

Cracks & Discontinuity

Detects major cracks, cold joints or breaks across the section โ€” for example from handling, driving or ground movement.

Poor Concrete Zones

Highlights segregated or weak, honeycombed concrete, because these zones change the way the wave travels.

Integrity Is Not the Same as Load Capacity

A pile integrity test tells you whether the pile is continuous and roughly as long as it should be. However, it does not tell you how much load the pile can carry. For this reason, your structural designer will specify a pile load test under IS 2911 (Part 4). As a result, most projects use both: PIT on every pile to screen for defects, and load tests on selected piles to confirm capacity.

A pile integrity test can

  • Check every pile on site quickly, so testing stays affordable
  • Locate major defects as well as their approximate depth
  • Estimate pile length from the toe reflection
  • Flag doubtful piles so you can core or retest them

A pile integrity test cannot

  • Measure the safe load or bearing capacity of a pile
  • See the toe clearly when piles are very long or soils are very stiff
  • Separate several defects clearly when a major one sits above them
  • Test piles that already sit under a finished pile cap

Before We Arrive on Site

Good pile head preparation gives clean, readable signals, so please have the following ready before testing day:

  • Pile heads cut to sound concrete โ€” chip off laitance and weak concrete so the top surface is hard, flat and roughly level.
  • Clean, dry and accessible heads โ€” remove standing water, slurry and loose debris, and also give our engineer safe access to each pile.
  • Concrete has gained enough strength โ€” we cannot test piles while the concrete is still green, so we confirm the right timing for your piles when you book.
  • Pile schedule and records โ€” because pile IDs, diameter, design and as-built length, and casting dates help us interpret every signal accurately.
  • Pile caps not yet cast โ€” we test after head trimming but before anyone concretes the pile cap.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pile integrity test?

A pile integrity test (PIT) is a non destructive test that checks whether a concrete pile is continuous and free from major defects such as necking, voids, cracks or soil inclusions. First, a light hammer tap on the pile head sends a low strain stress wave down the pile. Then an accelerometer records the reflections, and finally an engineer reads the resulting reflectogram to judge the pile's integrity and estimate its length.

Which Indian Standard covers the pile integrity test?

In India, labs carry out the pile integrity test as per IS 14893:2021, Low Strain Non-Destructive Integrity Testing of Piles โ€” Guidelines (First Revision). Specifically, the Bureau of Indian Standards issued it as the revised version of IS 14893:2001. Accordingly, Jancy Labs tests and reports pile integrity in line with IS 14893:2021.

What defects can a pile integrity test detect?

A pile integrity test can detect major changes in the pile's cross-section or concrete quality, such as necking (reduced section), bulging (increased section), voids, soil or slurry inclusions, major cracks, cold joints and breaks. It also gives the approximate depth of each anomaly and an estimate of the pile length from the toe reflection.

Does a pile integrity test tell the load capacity of a pile?

No, because a pile integrity test checks only continuity and length. Therefore, it does not measure how much load a pile can safely carry. Instead, a pile load test under IS 2911 (Part 4) confirms load capacity. For this reason, most projects use PIT on all piles and load tests on selected piles.

How soon after casting can you test a pile?

The concrete must gain enough strength for the stress wave to travel cleanly, so we do not test piles while the concrete is still green. However, the exact timing depends on the concrete and site conditions. Therefore, tell us your casting dates when you book, and we will confirm when your piles are ready.

How do I prepare the pile head for PIT?

First, trim the pile head down to sound concrete and remove laitance and weak concrete. In addition, the top surface should be hard, roughly flat and level, clean, free of standing water or slurry, and safe to reach. We then test after head trimming but before anyone casts the pile cap.

Which types of piles can you test?

We use the pile integrity test on concrete piles, such as bored cast-in-situ piles, driven cast-in-situ piles and precast concrete piles. However, very long piles, piles in very stiff soils and piles with joints can limit how deep the signal reads clearly. For this reason, we review your pile details in advance and tell you what to expect.

What does the pile integrity test report contain?

The report lists each pile's ID, diameter, recorded length and casting date, as well as its reflectogram, the wave speed used, the estimated pile length, the approximate depth of any anomaly and the engineer's remarks. Finally, an Authorised Engineer signs every report.
