What is the CBR Test?

The CBR test tells you the load-bearing strength of your subgrade soil — the critical value you need for pavement design. Furthermore, your CBR value directly determines the thickness of your road’s base, sub-base, and surface layers. Therefore, an inaccurate CBR value leads to premature pavement failure, costly rework, or outright rejection by your approving authority.

Applicable Standards for California Bearing Ratio Testing

Jancy Labs conducts every California Bearing Ratio test strictly as per the following standards:

Following the correct standard ensures your CBR report is valid, defensible, and accepted without question. Therefore, Jancy Labs references the applicable standard explicitly on every single report.

Why the CBR Test Matters for Your Road Project

  • PWD approval — Tamil Nadu PWD requires a certified CBR report before accepting any pavement design submission
  • IRC:37 flexible pavement design → Mandatory Indian standard requiring CBR values for all road design
  • NHAI & PMGSY compliance — Highway and rural road projects require CBR testing at defined intervals
  • Southern Railway & AAI — Rail yard and airport pavement projects require CBR data for subgrade assessment
  • Pavement cost control — Accurate CBR prevents over-designing layers — saving significant project costs
  • Legal protection — Documented CBR results protect you if pavement performance disputes arise

Skipping or estimating CBR values almost always causes regulatory rejection and delays your entire project timeline.

How to Get Your CBR Test Done at Jancy Labs

Step 1 — Send Your Sample

Sample quantity required:
  • Minimum 35 kg disturbed soil for a standard CBR test
  • Additional 5–10 kg if soaked CBR test required
  • Collect from proposed subgrade level — 500 mm below formation level
  • Remove all particles coarser than 19 mm before packing
How to collect and pack:
  • Place soil in heavy-duty airtight polythene bag
  • Seal tightly — moisture preservation is critical for accurate results
  • Double-bag for protection during transit
  • Label outer bag clearly with permanent waterproof marker
  • Undisturbed samples — use sealed PVC tubes, waxed at both ends
What to include with your sample:
  • Project name and full site address
  • Company name and direct contact number
  • Sample ID, collection point, and depth below ground
  • Date of sample collection
  • Test type — soaked CBR or unsoaked CBR
  • Consultant specifications or contract reference if applicable
How to dispatch:
    • Courier / Transport to Jancy Labs, No.6 Ganesh nagar 3rd street, Surya Nagar, Alagarkoil Mainroad, Madurai-625007
    • Direct drop-in during working hours 10AM to 6PM
    • WhatsApp tracking Number to +91-9994421275

Step 2 — We Test It

Your sample is registered, labelled, and assigned a unique test ID on arrival at Jancy Labs. Furthermore, our engineers conduct every step of IS 2720 Part 16 — from sieving and compaction through soaking and penetration testing. Additionally, all data is personally reviewed by a qualified engineer before any result is recorded.

Turnaround time: 8 Days (Max)

Step 3 — You Receive Your Certified CBR Report

  1. Sample receipt and logging — Sample ID assigned, condition and quantity recorded
  2. Sieve check — Material above 20mm removed per IS 2720 Part 16 requirement
  3. Moisture content determination — Natural moisture content of received sample measured
  4. Proctor compaction — Soil compacted at OMC to required density in 150mm CBR mould
  5. Soaking (soaked CBR) — Sample submerged for 96 hours with surcharge weight applied; swell recorded daily
  6. Penetration test — Plunger advanced at 1.25 mm/min; load recorded at standard intervals per IS 2720 Part 16
  7. CBR value calculation — Load-penetration curve plotted; CBR calculated at 2.5mm and 5.0mm
  8. Report preparation and sign-off — Results reviewed and certified report issued

Every CBR test result is reviewed and signed by a qualified Geotechnical Engineer before dispatch.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a CBR test take at Jancy Labs? The soaked CBR test requires 96 hours of soaking followed by the penetration test. Jancy Labs typically issues your certified CBR report within 8 working days of receiving your sample, including soaking time.

Can I send soil samples for CBR testing by courier to Jancy Labs?
Yes. Jancy Labs accepts soil samples for CBR testing sent by courier or transport service. Pack your sample in a sealed polythene bag inside a rigid container to prevent moisture loss during transit. Include your project name, site location, and collection depth.

Is your CBR test report accepted by Tamil Nadu PWD?
Yes. Jancy Labs CBR reports are issued as per IS 2720 Part 16 and are accepted by Tamil Nadu PWD, NHAI projects, and PMGSY road contractors. Every report carries the signature of a qualified Geotechnical Engineer and the Jancy Labs stamp.

Do you conduct both soaked and unsoaked CBR tests?
Yes. Jancy Labs conducts both soaked CBR and unsoaked CBR tests as per IS 2720 Part 16. Most highway and PWD projects require the soaked CBR value for pavement design. Specify which variant you need when submitting your sample.

How much soil do I need to send for a CBR test?
For a single CBR test as per IS 2720 Part 16, Jancy Labs requires a minimum of 6 kg of disturbed soil per test variant. If you need both soaked and unsoaked CBR, send at least 12 kg. Collect from the required subgrade depth and seal immediately after collection.
