Definition and Construction process of Wet Mix Macadam (WMM)

Wet Mix Macadam is a cluster of granulated aggregate material that is used to layer a pavement or on top of GSB layered road. Wet Mix Macadam is compacted to multiple layers and it must not exceed 200 mm of thickness during construction. This layer is finely flattened and compacted using a Heavy road roller.

Definition of Wet Mix Macadam
Wet Mix Macadam is a sub base layer for road construction, which is made up of mixture of fragmented aggregates, cement or bitumen mix along with right proportion of water. This layer of wet mix macadam is laid on a preprepared pavements or GSB layered roads, and compacted with the help of heavy rollers to achieve an even and smooth construction.

Wet Mix Macadam is commonly used in the road construction due to its ability to withstand harsh weather conditions, heavy vehicle loads and durable functionality for a longer period of time.

Step by Step process for Construction of Wet Mix Macadam
The construction of Wet Mix Macadam layer is explained briefly.

Preparation of WMM
Selecting a suitable material for preparing the wet mix macadam is very essential. Aggregates like sand, stone or gravel could be used with help of a binding agent like water. Then the properties of those materials are evaluated to calculate their performance. After examining the properties of the materials, the optimum mix design is determined with the help of the calculated values, requirements and properties of the materials.

Production of Wet Mix Macadam Mixture
After preparing and evaluating the basic ingredients for the Wet Mix Macadam, the mixture of Wet Mix Macadam is produced. For this process, the initial process is crushing the aggregates into desired size evenly and then they are combined together with binder like cement or bitumen along with water in a plant which mixes these components in a uniform manner and also the moisture content is monitored throughout the process.

Laying the WMM mix for construction
Before laying the Wet Mix Macadam onto a surface, we must make sure that the surface is perfectly levelled and cleaned inorder to avoid any discomfort during the process. Then the mixture is evenly spread out using a road paver and flattened with the help of a heavy roller. The thickness of the layer should be monitored during this process and it must be around 100 mm.

Compaction and Curing of the Wet Mix Macadam
Compaction and Curing are the two major process after laying the mixture on the surface of the road. After laying the mixture, compaction must be done immediately with the help of a compactor or heavy road roller. This process is carried out throughout the compaction from the initial to the final stage with periodic intervals.

Then the compacted surface is allowed to cure for about 24 to 48 hours to maintain a perfect surface. The surface is watered regularly to maintain moisture and the surface is prevented from vehicle usage for a short time after completing the process, to protect the surface from damage.

This is the process followed to construct a wet mix macadam WMM on a surface or pavement.
